The Land Between the Bridges. . .

From the balconies at Olde Towne, the views are astounding. Blackbeard’s Queen Ann’s Revenge, were she still afloat where she went aground, would be visible in the center of this photo. The wreck lies just off the beach. Rich in history, this inlet and the small hamlets of Beaufort and Morehead City have settler histories reaching back over 400 years. Prior to that, local indigenous peoples roamed these dunes and forests.

Today this is not only a recreational boating mecca, but ocean going ships visit the port of Morehead City nearly every day. Often, they can be seen off-shore waiting their turn to come in and transfer cargos of lumber, potash, fertilizer and fuel.

We call this place the ‘land between the bridges’ because we truly are on an island. Two high rise bridges join Radio Island with Morehead City and Beaufort. Surrounded by water, we are a major center of recreational and local commercial fishing fleets. The ten mile trip to Cape Lookout is a favorite among local boaters. A well kept secret, local folks will escape to the Cape, where mile upon mile of unspoiled beaches, coves, trails and dunes await. Between Shackleford Banks and the Cape Lookout National Seashore, one could literally get lost walking the beaches.

With history predating our own American Independence, a proud, gracious local community and ideal weather – our Land Between the Bridges is a perfect home.
